Ever Noticed Some "Diet Gurus" Don't Look That Good?

Thursday, 16 August 2007
Hi, I am Dr John Tickell and for my blog debut I thought I might start with a little controversy.

Have you ever noticed that some other "diet gurus" don't actually look that healthy? And actually look either a bit overweight, a bit sallow in the face or seem to always be in well made suits. It's interesting isn't it...look it's not beyond the realms of possibility that I might just challenge some other diet gurus to a bit of a naked–off. It may just be something that needs to be done...because somehow I am banking on it that advocates of the high protein / high animal fat diets don't look that great under the designer suits...watch this blog for more...we might just have Doc throwing down the gauntlet soon.

The other thing that I find really interesting is that most diet programs come from 'gurus' who have never been to a country where there are no fat people and watched what they eat and how they live their lives. My two Medical Doctors children and I have visited in total more than one hundred countries around the world. We know which people are lean, energetic and long-living. This is real life proof based on healthy lifestyles that have been around for thousands of years, not drastic and potentially dangerous slimming theories that have been cooked up overnight. Why wouldn't we build on the knowledge of the longest living people on earth?

OK I'm not sure I'm in the right place - these comments seem from months ago?? I have just joined the Inner Circle and maybe I'm missing something.

I just started the Great Australian Diet - I'm only on Day 4 of Week 1. I just wanted some more info and wondered if there was anywhere I could go to ask some questions.

One I have is the Fail Safe Snacks. I am unsure when you can use these instead of the suggested snacks on the daily "menu" plans. Are they able to be substituted for say, a sip of smoothie and a couple of strawberries, or are they for later on in the programme? If you could guide me to where I might find some answers, and also help me out with what more is available on the Inner Circle?

With regard to major depressive episodes, you forgot to mention that it is characterised by one or more major depressive episodes - at least two weeks of depressed mood or loss of interest accompanied by at least four additional symptoms of depression (DSM-IV, 2005).

Those symptoms on their own are not cause to consider depression, however combined and if ongoing you would have to consider that for that person this might be an appropriate diagnosis.

Sure, we do over-medicate, over-psych etc however we should be working on health promotion for the "worried-well" to avoid intervention down the track!

I agree with you Dr John. I read through the list of symptoms and I get about 6 of these often and I'm telling you I'm not depressed!

This list is dangerous and it is all America's fault, just like most of the bad food in this world.

Be careful you might be trying to turn a serious illness into something trivial. People get depressed and need help.

PS: I love being a member!

I started following your nutrition guidelines earlier this year and now they are very much a part of my families life. Rule of 15 is awesome and I don't know how I ever got by before cut up fruit and vege soup found their way into our fridge. We are never bored and love your cookbook too. Thank you Doctor

I focused the on Rule of 15 - 15 different types of plant foods. It helped me bc it was something positive to focus on not negative. I also found if I ate a good breakfast I didn't feel the need to buy junk. I did find it hard though bc I was used to having a muffin with my coffee but now I just get up a little bit earlier or I do my fruit the night before and put it in the fridge. Also once I started losing weight I was really happy so it made me realise it was working. Don't know if this helps...

I have just started Dr John's diet. The first couple of days have been hard - no muffins, no treats and lots of vegetable soup. But I can already feel myself starting to clean out the old stuff and put in the new. I just hope I can last, because after the birth of my third child I just really let myself go and I have to do something because now it is hard to even find anything to wear. I spend ages just getting ready and nothing looks good and I feel terrible everytime I go out so I eat even more. I'll let you know how I am going next week. What's the best way to get through the first couple of weeks?

This is such a good point. I had never noticed it before but that diet Amber didn't want to mention - well I tried it for a while. And sure I lost some weight but I just didn't feel good, I had no energy and I even though I was losing weight I still felt like a blob. I have read your book and have now been on the straight and narrow for 20 days. I feel great and this website makes me feel even more supported. I really hope this time I can get the weight off and keep it off. Who else out there is trying the Great Australian diet?Wonderwoman

Great points Dr John! Many Australians have willingly undertaken a 'high protein low carb' diet in recent years because it has been 'scientifically proven' by a leading research organisation, which I wont name for defamation reasons.

This diet has heart attack victims increasing the very foods their cardiologists advise them to reduce. Sigh. With all the conflicting advice out there is it any wonder people become disillusioned due to confusion.
